Parenting, Products & Programming
In this month’s virtual meet-up we’ll be exploring the power of transferable skills in tech.

Whilst working from home, for many of us the lines between family, rest and work have be blurred. In this month’s meet-up we’ll be hearing from two parents as they share their reflections on how the skills required for their ‘day-jobs’ and ‘home-lives’ really aren’t all that different.

Whether you’re a parent or not, whether you’re currently working in tech or considering a career change, we’re sure there will be something for everyone in these entertaining talks from two of Sheffield’s top tech bods!

Speakers:

Ian McShane

Iain has been a Software Tester for 12 years. He loves to find out how things work, how they might break and how to make them better. He has worked on apps and sites for government projects, a city council, a water company and a model train shop.

He currently spends his days asking developers awkward questions at a well known gambling company.

For the past 18 months*, almost all Iain has done is be a parent or a tester, and it turns out some of the skills required are transferable! He’ll be taking a (hopefully) entertaining look at where the two jobs overlap.

*At the time of writing anyway. Things have changed a bit since. We’ll get to that later…

Sophia Chambers-Dixon

Is the Lead Engineer for the Intelligence API Team at Egress Software Technologies here in Sheffield. She is also the Founder of a non-profit organization called ‘The Donny Job Shop’ which helps support people into work, education or training opportunities and a mum of three!

Following on from Iain , Sophia will be discussing the similarities between leading an engineering team and the advantages of applying project management skills to both ‘the home’ and ‘the office’ environment. Peppered with relatable examples from her own experience she’ll be sharing her thoughts on how ‘the home’ and ‘the office’ bring forth two sets of very different agile delivery results /metrics and how the tech sector supports parents wanting a work/life balance.
